Acceptance

The world of dieting and weight loss is confusing and often contradictory.  One diet will tell you carbs are evil - avoid them at all cost, and the next will tell you a healthy diet contains atleast 60% carbs.  If you try to follow all of the advice out there you will go exactly nowhere.

In reality there is only one universal truth to losing weight and that is - you must eat fewer calories and move more.

This is far from being an earth moving statement and I think most of us know it is true but the key is, do you accept it as the truth?

Acceptance that you must eat less and move more is the key but none of us want this solution because this solution stinks - at least at first.  Who wants to eat smaller portions?  Who wants to sweat?  You can resist this solution all you want but it won’t change the fact that it is the truth.  The only way to stop resisting this reality is to accept it.

I had a hard time with acceptance when I lost my weight 7 years ago.  Specifically I realized that in order for me to lose weight and keep it off I would have to give up my nightly big bowl of ice cream.  I felt horrible at first when this reality hit me but as I grew to accept it I realized two things.  First, when I ate ice cream I didn’t always feel good afterwards and second, there were some alternatives.  I realized that I couldn’t control myself with a 1/2 gallon of ice cream in the house but I could control myself if I bought the small portion controlled ice cream cups (100 calories) at the store.  I also realized that I like jello with yogurt folded in (just make sugar-free jello and cool it then before it is set fold in a flavored sugar-free and fat-free yogurt) and I can eat more of this for fewer calories than ice cream.

With acceptance comes freedom and the opportunity to change your relationship with food.  I hope this is helpful information and welcome you comments.

P.S.  The diet plan I recommend to my clients is based on the New American Plate plan put out by the AICR (American Institute for Cancer Research) you can learn more about their diet at www.AICR.org.  The diet on their website is focused on the prevention of cancer, I organized the diet in a way to emphasis healthy weight loss and put that in a book with an easy to follow format for my clients.  If you are interested in this book simply send me an email beckygillaspy@verizon.net.
