What 5% of dieters understand
If 95% of dieters return to their old habits and regain the weight they lost, maybe it is time for some new thoughts on weight loss.
A Consumer Reports survey of 37,000 people trying to lose weight found that most who kept it off, didn’t follow any commercial diet at all. They adapted to a new way of eating, found an exercise they could enjoy for life and found a purpose to continue. In other words they created their own ideal way to eat and exercise, not someone else’s.
If you are overweight there is no doubt that you have some bad habits that are contributing to your condition but I believe that habits are different from our natural tendencies. Some of us have a natural tendency to eat small frequent meals while others prefer three somewhat more substantial meals spread out over the day. Some of us are ready for dinner at 4:30 pm and others at 6:30 pm. Whatever is natural for us can be managed and adapted to help us lose weight.
Many commercial diets try to put eating on a schedule that differs from your natural tendency then when you stop following their ideals you get mad at yourself for being so weak. In reality it is not weakness, it is resistance to going against your bodies natural desire.
Your body has a natural tendency toward health and this includes the maintenance of a healthy weight. Your body does not want to be overweight and it does not want to be anorexic. If you stop resisting the natural desire of your body you will maintain a proper weight.
So how do you stop resisting? It starts with awareness. One of the best exercises you can do is to become aware of your current eating patterns then instead of trying to adopt the next new diet plan that hits the best seller list you can get busy working on improving your diet.
