How to avoid overeating at family gatherings

Families often center get-togethers around food and they don’t always provide healthy choices so here are a few suggestions on how to stay on course.

  1. Avoid the common thought trap - "One day of not caring won’t matter."  One day of unrestricted overindulgence can take you many days of recovery.  Remind yourself that you want your goal more than the food.
  2. Have a non-calorie drink in your hand any time you are around food to avoid mindlessly putting food in your mouth.
  3. If it is a potluck event make your contribution a veggie tray and eat away.
  4. Divert your attention when you find yourself thinking about the food table - play a board game, get wrapped up in a conversation or ask someone to take a walk with you.
  5. Don’t worry about hurting someone’s feelings by not eating dessert or having seconds.  If you don’t make a big deal about it neither will anyone else.  (If they do ignore them you have bigger things to achieve.)

Losing weight is 50% having the right mindset and 50% diet and exercise.  Make sure your head is in the right place before you get to the gathering.  And, if you prepare yourself and try your best yet you still eat a bit more then you wanted to - forgive yourself and get right back to achieving your goal.
