Cleaning Up Your Environment
No one is immune to temptation so it is a good idea for anyone who is making changes in their eating habits to create a "safe" environment for themselves, one that is free of "problem foods".
If you cannot leave a bag of chips alone, then don’t bring them in the house. If you feel compelled to pull into a fast food restaurant every time you pass it then drive a different route. Don’t set yourself up to fail by leaving temptation in your path.
Ice cream has always been a problem food for me. That doesn’t mean ice cream is evil or that I have to give it up for the rest of my life in order to maintain a healthy weight; what is does mean is that I cannot have a 1/2 gallon sitting in my freezer or I will eat the whole thing. So, I don’t buy it anymore, I still feel free to eat it but I control the environment I live in.
We often lie to ourselves in the grocery store, telling ourselves that we can handle having our favorite high-calorie foods around the house. Let me tell you, the day will come when you don’t feel so strong; don’t make it harder by having the food readily available.
So how do you clean up your environment? First, take an honest assessment of your surroundings. Where is food stashed? Are there snacks in the house, car, your purse or office? Are there unhealthy choices in your refrigerator, freezer, or cupboards? Are there bowls of candy sitting around your house or on your desk at work? All of these things are traps when you have a weak moment so take action now to rid your environment of these things or schedule a time to do this before temptation takes over.
No one escapes temptation but you can control it by controlling your environment. Give this some thought and I would love to hear your comments.
