Fruit - Too Much of a Good Thing?

Fruit is a wonderful thing, besides being delicious it is literally packed with vitamins and nutrients, but if you are trying to lose weight you can get too much of a good thing.  Fruits tend to be high in natural sugar which can make them hard to manage in a diet.

I recommend that fruit be eaten early in the day, preferably by noon.  Carbohydrates, like fruit, are handled best by the body early in the day when we are more active and more able to use the readily available energy that this type of food gives us.

If I have a client with insulin resistance which is a condition that makes it harder for the body to convert food (particularly carbs) to energy, I will have that client limit fruit to once a day for about two weeks.  Clients with insulin resistance tend to have a harder time losing weight and I have found that limiting fruit intake (this includes fruit juices) as well as eating no carbs after lunch for a two week period helps "prime" the body for weight loss success and lessens cravings for refined carbs.
