How to Set an Effective Goal

Setting a goal is one of the first steps in any weight loss program but do you know how to increase your changes of reaching your goal?

     Here are some tips:

  1. Writing down a goal is one of the keys to achieving it.  In fact studies show that people who write down their goals are much more likely to achieve them than people who merely think about a goal.
  2. Phrase your goal in the present tense by using "I am…" as opposed to "I want to…"
  3. Include "feeling words" in your goal statement such as "I am thrilled now that…"
  4. Be precise, you want your goal to be a clear bullseye, not a hazy approximation.

SAMPLE:   Incorrect:  "I want to lose weight."

Correct:  "I am happy and full of life now that I weigh 130 pounds."

    5.  The last step in successful goal setting is to read your goal to yourself and, below the goal, write down any negative thoughts or feeling that come to your mind.  You might hear that subtle voice in the back of your head whisper, "You’ll never be able to do that." or "This is going to be too hard."  These thoughts need to be addressed or they will sabotage your chances of success.  You can either decide to let go of the negative feeling or shift your goal until these thoughts become positive.
