What is the Best Snack to Have if You are Trying to Lose Weight?
More and more studies are showing that diets high in refined carbohydrates contribute to weight gain (especially when these foods are consumed in the evening). If we just think for a moment about the typical snack choices available to us we quickly realize that many are high in refined carbohydrates, and therefore not good snack choices: pretzels, chips, cereal, chocolate, crackers, baked goods, soda, all spell diet disaster when eaten often.
So what do you do when your body needs a snack? The best choice is to have a protein or high fiber snack. Protein and high-fiber foods are harder for the digestive system to break down and therefore stay in your system longer. This serves two purposes: first, it keeps you satisfied longer and second it prevents future cravings because it keeps your blood sugar level steady.
So snack smart with protein like a piece of cheese or lunch meat, some turkey, a glass of skim milk, a deviled egg, a handful of nuts, or even some beef jerky in a pinch. Or if you wish, snack even smarter with a high-fiber snack such as vegetables and some low-fat dip. Your body will thank you and you will be happier with the reading on the scale.
