Changing Your Relationship with Food

Dieting too often becomes a tug-of-war between what we are forcing our body to do and what our body wants to do.  This resistance usually builds our frustration level until we break and give up on the the diet.

To change your relationship with food and dieting you need to get in touch with how and when your body really wants to be fed.  In order to effectively get in touch with your body I recommend you first do a hunger scale exercise.  For a few days in a row check in with your body before every eating occasion.  Ask yourself – How hungry am I?  And give yourself a numerical rating using a scale of 0 – 10 (with 0 meaning you are starving and 10 meaning you are over-stuffed).  You may find it difficult at first to distinguish actual physical hunger from head hunger but after 3 or 4 days you will find making this distinction much easier.

This is the first step toward working with your body instead of against it.  Tomorrow we will explore more ways of breaking down the resistance we build to our body’s natural wants and needs.
