Common Thought Traps – Part I
I came across some old notes I had taken on "Common Thought Traps" so I thought it would be fun and interesting to share these traps with you so you could see if you identify with any (or all) of them. Today I want to highlight two…
- Magnify the Negative — This common thought trap is defined by the tendency to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Example: You step on the scale and you are up a half pound when you expected to be down a half. You think "I can’t believe it, I knew this diet wouldn’t work!"
- Eliminate the Positive — This is the tendency to trivialize your accomplishments or exaggerate others accomplishments. Example: You lose 1 pound this week but your friend loses 2. You think, "I hate my body, I can’t get it to do anything."
As frequent readers of my blog should know, I always say — every action begins with a thought. If you find yourself falling into one of the thought traps described above, you might be making it hard on yourself to stick to a diet plan. If you think about the examples, neither one means the end of the world has come but if you let yourself dwell on these thoughts you might quit before your goal is met. What can you do? To handle the situation better, accept the facts about what happened, let go of any strong emotions that pop up and take your next step forward.
More common thought traps to come…see you back here soon!
