How to Exterminate ANTS
I recently posted and article on my blog called Trouble Losing Weight? Maybe You have ANTS in Your Head. ANTS are Automatic Negative Thoughts that pop into our heads when we are trying to reach a goal. I was recently asked if I had any suggestions on how to eliminate the ANTS. I am sharing my reply below.
Thank you for your comment on the ANTS blog. You may have noticed the impact negative thinking can have on your goals. Automatic Negative Thoughts can be turned around; in order to do this you must override them with more positive or empowering thoughts. This takes time and repetition but anyone can do it. I teach a five step process to my clients to accomplish this so let me give you a brief idea so you can start to turn these negative thoughts around.
• Desire – If ANTS come in when you are trying to reach a goal, then your first step is to get very clear on what you want to accomplish. Sit down and write out why you want to make this change and firmly plant that in your mind.
• Belief – Belief is possibly the biggest key to eliminating ANTS. You must completely believe in your ability to reach your goal and you can reinforce this through affirmations, my blog post called Believe to Achieve covers this in more detail.
• Commitment – Commitment tends to be strong at the beginning of a goal and then wane. To keep ANTS away you need to keep a strong commitment. My post called 4 No-Fail Strategies for Keeping Your Commitment will help you here.
• Self-Worth – No one ever achieves greatness by putting themselves down. A poor sense of self-worth is turned around by focusing on what is good instead of what is bad – this is a great ANT exterminator.
• Flexibility – Flexibility is a learned skill and I emphasize using curiosity to create more flexible. Curiosity keeps your mind open while its opposite, judgment, closes the mind. For instance, if you stray from your diet ask yourself why you did instead of getting mad at yourself. This is very effective, try it out.
