Don’t Deny Your Cravings
According to a new study, the more you suppress you desire for comfort foods, the more you will end up eating.
In a study out of England’s Hertfordshire University, a group of 134 subjects were involved in a study to determine if we can successfully block out our cravings for rich, fatty foods. Some of the participants were told to suppress all thoughts and desires for chocolate while the others were encouraged to talk freely about their love for the food.
Later the participants were given a choice of two chocolates, they thought the study leaders were tracking which brand they choose but actually the amount of chocolate they took is what the researchers were interested in.
What was their conclusion? Denying our desire seems to make it stronger. On average, the female subjects who tried to suppress all thoughts of chocolate ate 8 pieces of the sweet treat, while those who were allowed to speak freely about it only ate 5.
The morale of the story? If you set yourself up with unrealistic expectations, such as "I’ll never eat chocolate again" what you are really setting yourself up for is failure. Boundaries are good and necessary but be realistic and allow yourself a bit of play room within your goal. You will increase your chances of success and you will avoid wanting to hurt somebody because you need Chocolate!!!
