Program Your Mind to Support Your Goal

As you know, I borrow a lot of ideas from the study of human potential.  One of my favorite teachers in this arena is James Ray.  Ray talks about the differences between the conscious and the subconscious mind.  The conscious mind is the center for your thinking and we have a degree of direct control over this part of our mind.  Our subconscious mind, on the other hand, is where our habits and beliefs are stored, our subconscious mind is not under our direct control but we can program it by using our conscious thought process in a repetitive nature.  In other words, if we wanted to belief something, then tell yourself it enough and you will start to believe it.  If you want to act in a different way, then do that thing differently over a period of time and you will create a new habit.

This is a bit of an oversimplification, but this process of programming is explainable.  The subconscious mind does not seem to have the ability to distinguish between what is "real" and what is imagined.  So if you imagine yourself eating healthy and enjoying it, and you do this over and over again without doubt, your subsconscious mind will accept it as the truth and create habits and behaviors that support your healthy eating.

The subconscious mind is a follower, it follows the instructions given to it by through conscious thought.  This is why it is so vitally important to think in a way that supports your goals.  If you have a goal of losing 50 pounds but you are constantly telling yourself, "I hate losing weight." or "I have never been successful losing weight."  What kind of outcome can you expect?

Give your subconscious mind clear instruction.  Tell yourself over and over again a few phrases that you want to believe, "I love eating well and exercising everyday." "I am absolutely certain I will weigh 145 pounds on November 30th."  And don’t do the cardinal sin which is to think in alignment with your goal one day and lapsing into doubt and negativity the next.  There is no room for negative self-talk when you are working toward reaching a goal.  This kind of back and forth thought process acts to confuse your subconscious mind and you will get nowhere.

Start creating the life you want know, if you can think it, you can achieve it.
