Portion Distortion-How Portion Sizes Have Grown over the Years

The past twenty years have produced a lot of change and our "normal" portion size is no exception. Here are a few examples of how our portions have grown over the past two decades.

  • 20 Years ago a Bagel was                140 calories and 3" in diameter
  • Today a Bagel is                             350 calories and 6" in diameter
  • 20 Years ago a Cheeseburger was   333 calories
  • Today a Cheeseburger is                 590 calories
  • 20 Years ago Spaghetti was           500 cal. – 1 cup – 3 sm. meatballs
  • Today a bowl of Spaghetti is          1,025 cal. – 2 cups – 3 lg. meatballs
  • 20 Years ago French Fries were       210 calories — a 2.4 ounce serving
  • Today French Fries are                   610 calories — a 6.9 ounce serving
  • 20 Years ago Soda was                    85 calories and a 6.5 ounce serving
  • Today Soda is                                250 calories and a 20 ounce serving
  • 20 Years ago a Muffin was              210 calories — a 1.5 ounce serving
  • Today a Muffin is                           500 calories — a 4 ounce serving
  • 20 Years ago Pizza was                   500 calories — 2 small slices
  • Today Pizza is                                850 calories — 2 large slices
  • 20 Years ago Cookies were            55 calories for a 1.5" Chocolate Chip
  • Today a Cookie is                         275 calories for a 3.5" Chocolate Chip
