How to Tell You are Eating Whole Grains
Whole Grains are an important part of a healthy diet, they provide dietary fiber along with trace minerals and other natural health protectors. Studies have shown that a diet high in whole grains can cut your risk of cancer by 34%. The problem is Americans are only choosing about 12% of their daily grains as whole grains. The newest dietary guidelines recommend choosing 50% or more of your daily grain servings from whole grains.
Food manufacturers will sometimes claim that their product is made with whole grains but this can be deceiving. To be sure you are getting a food made with whole grains, look for one of the following whole grains to be listed as the first ingredient on the package food label.
- Whole Wheat
- Whole Corn
- Whole Oats
- Whole Rye
- Wild Rice
- Brown Rice
- Bulgar
- Graham Flour
- Oatmeal
