Why Be Physically Active?

Abundant_life      Exercise can maximize your weight loss effort and bring a truckload of health benefits into your life.  Here are some great reasons to keep being…

…or to become physically active.

How does exercise help with weight loss?

  • More of the weight you lose will be fat
  • Your metabolism increase (so you use up more calories even when you’re resting)

People who are successful at losing weight find that being physically active is one of the major factors in maintaining that weight loss.  Combine this good news with the health and well-being benefits that come with regular exercise and you’ve got lots to gain.

What health benefits can you expect from regular exercise?

  • Reduced risk of heart disease
  • Reduced high blood pressure
  • Improved mood
  • Help with controlling joint swelling and pain associated with arthritis
  • Reduced risk of developing colon cancer and breast cancer
  • Reduced risk of developing diabetes
  • Help with controlling weight, building lean muscle, and reducing body fat
  • Builds and maintains healthy muscles, bones, and joints
  • Improved strength, balance, and functional ability in older adults

There are basically two types of exercise:

Cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise includes anything that works your heart and lungs hard, such as brisk walking, jogging, swimming and cycling.

Resistance (anaerobic) training includes any exercise using weights or other forms of resistance such as elastic tubing or bands.

What is best for you?

The target for good health and weight control is at least 30 minutes of ‘moderate-intensity’ activity on at least 6 days of the week.  A combination of cardiovascular and resistance type exercises should make up your exercise routine.

“Moderate-intensity’ means being active enough so that your breathing and heart rate is faster than normal and you’re feeling warm.  Aim to reach your “conversational pace” – you should be able to talk but only in 5 -6  word segments before needing to take a breath.

Aim to be as active as possible as often as you can, any amount of physical activity is better than none at all.

If you don’t want the hassle of joining a gym and the cold winter weather is driving you in-doors then consider an exercise DVD.  Million Dollar Body has a great selection of videos for those who want to get started with exercise (Try Slim in 6 or TurboJam) or those who want to get in peak physical condition (Think P90X).  Here is the link to Million Dollar Body, when there click on Products.
