How to Lose Weight Effectively - 80/20 Rule
This year here at Weight Loss without Worry we are focused on giving up the struggle to lose weight to finally learn how to lose weight effectively. Though you might be at the point where you want to lose weight quick; effective weight loss is often a slower process that yields longer term results, and in the grand scheme of things this is what you want — true weight loss.
The past few posts have set the stage for giving up the fight by accepting certain truths (read How to Lose Weight Effectively – Acceptance) and revealed the importance of focusing on what you really want (read How to Lose Weight Effectively – Decide What You Want). Today we will explore a way of organizing life so you can create a system that will automate your weight loss.
This brings me to something called the 80/20 Rule. You may have heard of this rule before, basically stated it is a way of focusing your energies so you can yield the greatest results. If you are in sales for instance you would want to spend 80% of your day working on actively creating sales, this would mean making sales calls, visiting prospective clients or anything else that leads directly to a sale. The remaining 20% of your day would be spent doing bookkeeping, product research and anything else that supports your sales job but doesn’t directly create the sale.
We will use this 80/20 Rule to show you how to lose weight effectively. First of all, let me point out that most people get this completely backward, spending the majority of their time focused on finding the best exercise to lose weight and the best diet to lose weight. These are important components of an effective weight loss program but when they monopolize all of your time and energy you have no time left to do the work that is going to keep you committed and dedicated to your effective weight loss program and that is developing an empowering mindset.
There are 164 hours in a 7 day week, if we are asleep for 8 hours a day that means you have 112 waking hours to work with. 20% of 112 is 22.4 hours. That means only 1 to 1½ waking days a week should be spend working on developing your diet and exercise program. These things would include:
• planning meals for the week
• creating a shopping list
• shopping for the groceries
• preparing meals
• planning exercise
• exercising
This leaves you 5½ to 6 days (89.6 hours!) to work on your mindset! You might be thinking that sounds like a lot of mental work but let me point this out, your mind is working every second of every day, if you currently have thoughts and beliefs that make it hard for you to lose weight or keep weight off, thoughts such as…
Dieting is not worth the effort; every time I lose weight I gain it right back.
My whole family is overweight so I am destined to be the same.
One day of not caring won’t matter; I can eat today and diet tomorrow.
I hate to exercise
…then you are unconsciously setting yourself up on a daily basis to fail. Working on your mindset is a discipline at first because you must override years of wrong thinking but with every day that passes your old mindset fades and your new one gains strength and before long this reprogrammed mindset will begin to influence your habits and behaviors and you will lose weight not because of willpower but because you simply prefer to eat less and move more.
This is how to lose weight effectively. As you can imagine it is no magic pill for weight loss but if you are looking for true weight loss that will last you a life-time this is the only approach that works.
Conclusion: The most effective weight loss program has 3 elements:
1. Your best exercise to lose weight
2. Your best diet to lose weight
3. Your best mindset to lose weight
Over the course of this year we will spend 20% of our time and energy on solidifying your best diet and exercise to lose weight and 80% of our time and energy on building your best mindset and if you stick with this process and never allow doubt to enter your mind, I guarantee you will realized that true weight loss is not some elusive fantasy, it will be yours.
