Do Evening Snacks Make You Fat?

Caroline Shannon posted this interesting question on Her Active Life website.  In the article she points out that some researchers are starting to find evidence that discounts the widely held dieting belief that eating in the evening packs on the pounds.

One nutritionalist, Monica Reinagel, states that there are differences in how our body handles calories at different times of the day but most claims have been hugely exaggerated.  She goes on to state that, “What matters in terms of weight control are how many calories you take in and burn over the course of the entire day.  When you eat them doesn’t seem to matter in any significant way.”

The real problem with night-time eating might have to do with the fact that this type of snacking is often mindless.  A bag of chips can disappear before you know it while you mindlessly munch in front of the TV.

The article goes on to reference many experts and I recommend you read the rest by clicking here but the bottom line seems to be that you can’t outsmart your body, if you eat more calories than you burn off, regardless of what time of day those calories are eaten, you will gain weight.
