Do You Know Where You Are Going?
You’ve decided you want to lose weight, you’ve built a strong desire; you believe you are capable of making the change and you are committed to working until the job is complete. Now let me ask you – Do you know where you’re going?
Let’s say you decide to take a vacation to Disney World, you get time off of work, take the dog to the kennel, and pack the car – you don’t know specifically where Disney World is but you are sure it is in Florida and you figure if you start heading in that direction you will find it. Is this a good plan?
Sure you might stumble upon it, Disney is a big place but you will also waste a lot of time and gas trying to find where you are going.
Now most of us would not set out on a trip without knowing the exact location of our destination but many of us plan our weight loss program this way.
Merely deciding you must lose some weight is like driving to Florida in hopes of finding Disney World and when you are dieting you don’t want to have to rely on luck in order to hit your goal.
In order to lose weight effectively and efficiently you must have a crystal clear vision of where you are going. This is a step above just having a goal weight in mind, it involves creating a Wellness Vision.
A Wellness Vision is a brief paragraph that describes in vivid detail what life will be like, smell like, look like and feel like when you are where you want to be. Don’t be overly concerned with how you are going to get there. All that is important is that you have a clear vision of what “there” is. When you are certain about what you want and keep your mind constantly focused on it the “how” reveals itself.
Here is an example of a well crafted Wellness Vision:
It is July 1st and I am walking toward the park pavilion where my family is gathering for our annual family reunion. It is a beautiful sunny day and I can smell the clean fresh country air. My cousin’s, aunts and uncles can’t stop talking about how great I look. I feel like bursting with excitement inside.
Note that this Wellness Vision plays out like a mini-movie complete with a setting, main characters, action, sights, smells and feeling. Your vision statement should have the same elements and when you read it should evoke a very positive emotion inside.
Your Wellness Vision is your target, read it over and over everyday until it is so clear in your mind that you can recall it with vivid detail at anytime. The few minutes you take to create your vision may very well save you weeks or months of dieting work.
